It’s been a good year for rapper Wiz Khalifa. He put out an album, “Rolling Papers,” with Atlantic Records, landed a part in a stoner comedy opposite Snoop Dogg, and appears to have fallen love with Kanye West’s ex, Amber Rose.
“Everything seems to be moving in the right direction,” the Pittsburgh performer says.
But you know what all that touring and taping and making-a-lady-happy cuts into?
“I didn’t sleep at all last night,” Wiz (real name: Cameron Jibril Thomaz) says by phone as he rides to the airport. He’s going from New York to Los Angeles and hopes to spend the long flight less than conscious.
So quickly, let’s talk about what he’s been doing during his waking hours.
“Rolling Papers”: It’s not his debut album – that was “Show and Prove,” in 2006 – but it’s his first with Atlantic, and it landed No. 1 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums and Top Rap Albums. All this month, Wiz is touring in support of “Rolling Papers,” and he says his fans are showing him plenty of love: “Man, all types of love – it goes from singing the words (at the concerts) to crying at the meet-and-greets.”
The Snoop Dogg movie: It’s called “High School,” and in it, Wiz plays a nerd to Snoop’s cool guy. “I work my way up the ladder,” he says. “I was never the coolest guy in school, so it wasn’t hard for me” to slip into the role.
Sorry to say, the film doesn’t have a release date yet.
Amber Rose: She’s the statuesque model who left a rocky relationship with Kanye West and seems to have found bliss with Wiz. While he has been outspoken about their relationship – he once called her “my little munchy wunchy crumb cake” – he says he wants to focus on his professional life during this interview.
And as far as rumors the pair might be engaged?
“You’ll probably find out more later about that – what’s true and what’s not.”
Which, of course, tells us absolutely nothing.
And finally, marijuana: You can’t have Wiz without weed – seriously, did you see name of his current album? – and Wiz is fine with that, even after getting arrested on drug charges in 2010. An interviewer once provided him with several joints to see whether he could decipher what was in each one. The video’s posted on his website, and in it he says Bill Clinton’s the person he’d most like to smoke weed with.
“I get asked about (marijuana) all the time,” he says. “I’m completely comfortable talking about it…I think it’s like a common ground for anybody else into it.”
And with that, it’s time to hop on a plane and get some sleep.
